End result

Here are some still of my Project.

I used after effects to change the colour tones giving the impression that the scenes were set in different seasons, this is what the final result would have looked like.

Filming for Time Art

For Simon's Time Art project I booked a Cannon camera and tripod to do some filming on the 6th, March, 2014.

I had initially wanted to shoot the project over by the maltings theatre on a bench under a tree beside a stream.

However because we were unable to get to the location and back on time with the equipmement so we instead filmed on a bench set on the campus.

My project titled "Friendship Over Time" was filmed with the assistance of my classmates.

Heres a still of a work in progress.

Different seasons

Another example I've considered utilising for the time art project involves the scenery changing into different seasons getting across the idea that a long time has passed.

I've looked up several photos to serve as visual inspiration.

Reference from previous work

I've uncovered still photos from  one of my early projects from the course where me and my classmates were given a scenario and had to enact it and capture some still photos that tell that scenario.

this is similar to my idea fro the time project about two friends on a bench.

Sketches of time ideas

I've drawn sketches of possible ideas for my time project before I settled on the relationship based
film.

All these ideas I've had varied from one another but all consists on the subject of time.

Not so everlasting love sketch

Here is a concept art sketch based on my idea for the time project when it was at first revolving around a love relationship beginning and ending over time.

Not so ever lasting love Time Project

For the project I eventually settled on my initial idea that involved a couple meeting each other on a park bench, the initial inspiration came from a personal experience when a relative broke up from a relationship.

There have also been influence from films in the romance genre, there have been adaptations of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

Another example includes West Side Story which is seen a contemporary version of the idea.

There are also handful of romantic comedies from the 80's, 90's and early 2000's that served as influence.

While a degree of influence is needed I also felt it necessary to display and naivety, that the character are necessarily to familiar with relationships, its a matter that they pursue from their own perspective.

Their interaction and emotions indicate that they’re smitten with one another and they hit it off fairly well.

As time passes the background shows that it’s a new season and we see that their relationship has progressed however they now appear to be bored and less interested in each other, however there’s minimal effort from both of them to try but it hardly amounts to much.

Finally the couple is last seen arguing, falling out, splitting up, going their separate ways, all that remains is the memory of that place where the first met.

For the location I’ve decided to film near the river beside the Malting’s. However I’m going to have to ask their permission to film there.

Ideas I've for my Time Project

TIME PROJECT

I’ve considered various ideas for what to use for my time art project. These examples are as listed.

1.      A time lapse of a tree full of leaves in spring and summer transitioning to autumn/fall and finally winter. I found a time lapse video of something similar.

2.      Someone carving their names with a heart onto a tree, the carving being removed and finally the tree being chopped/sawed down.

3.      Someone eating an apple, taking its seed and planting them, there’s a time-lapse of the seeds growing into a full sized tree.

4.      Someone making a new friend and they get a picture taken together, later on that new friend is in a hospital bed and eventually dies, the friend is left lamenting his loss by looking at the photo he had taken.

5.      Metallic materials are harvest from the earth, they’re melted down and used to mask a sword/knife, the person whom forged the sword/knife is unfortunately killed by the very weapon.

6.      A caterpillar hatches from an egg, the caterpillar goes into a cocoon and finally hatches as a butterfly.

7.      An artist sculpts a statue of someone he loves, he presents the statue to her and she’s delighted by it but later on the statue eventually melts and shatter, thus “THE ICE HAS BROKEN” Bother literally and metaphorically.

8.      We see an explosion in outta space as a star is born, we seen planets and other satellites orbiting its solar system and finally the star reaches super nova and obliterates the surrounding planets.

9.       A bird hatches from an egg, it eventually leaves the nest flying away, and later on the bird has reached the end of its life and dies.

10.   Melted wax is being used to make a candle, we see someone lighting the candle, eventually the candle completely melts away and the fire diminishes.

11.  A guy has spent the whole day feeling very thirsty, in need of a drink. He manages to get to a water fountain and guzzles down lot of water to quench his thirst, however he is quickly in desperate need to go to the toilet and when he does manage to find on there is a long queue that he has to wait in.

12.  Its early in the morning and a car park is vacant, later that day cars beginning to fill up the car park, finally in the evening the cars drives off leaving the car park once again vacant.

13.  Its Friday evening and a cheerful student returns home for the weekend, he spends a lot of his time on the computer, Two days later its now Monday morning and it’s time to pack his bags and go back to Uni.

14.  A someone is spending time with their family, years later this person has lost their family and appears regretful, much later on the same person now old is bitter and frustrated that they’ve wasted their youth mopping over the past instead of making the most of life.

15.  We see a guy and a girl encounter each other in a on a park bench beside a stream, they hit it off pretty well you could even say it was love at first sight. A while later we see that their relationship has progressed however they don’t quite seem that too fixated with each other, they’ve  sort of become bored. Finally we see them in a argument, it’s a heart breaking sight as we witness their inevitable break up.

I’ve drawn sketches of my ideas which I intend to present.

Superman 3 Split Screen 4

The use of split screen in the film Superman 3 is film is very brief, afterwards it relies on actor and look a like double who turned around facing away from us so that we don't see his face.

Adaptation Split Screen Part 3

Charlie is a screen writer struggling to adapt an auto biographic novel into a coherent narrative based script for a film.

Actor Nicholas Cage plays both the writer and his Twin brother, this effect was achieved using the split screen.

Charly Part Nine (Flowers For Algernon) Split Screen Part 1

In the film Charly based on the novel Flowers for Algernon our main character Charlie is a man with mental deficiencies, after he under goes experimentations his intelligence increases exponentially. However later in the film is is to discover that he will loses he intelligence and revert back to the way he was before.

In this scene Charlie sees an apparition of his former self, he tries to flee but cannot escape, as though to symbolise that his fate is unavoidable.

This scene makes use of the split screen, an effect that allows the same actor to appear in the same frame, the shot was taken in one still but in two different takes and carefully integrated the two pieces of footage into one shot. This can effect can be utilised in a film centres around time travel where a character encounters their past/future dopplegรคnger.

The 6th Day Split Screen Part 2

In the film The 6th Day centers on Adam Gibson, an average family man living in the not too distant future, a time when cloning pets has been legalised, he returns home one evening to discover that a clone of himself has taken his place.

This film applies the split screen effect by having the same actor play two different roles and interact with one another.

the effect was most likely achieved by digitally cropping the frames merging the two together.

Time research

In Simon’s lesson I have been tasked to make three multi screened one minute looped films based on time.  Three different screens all the same or all different.
